A plan to reduce homelessness in Riverside by finding housing for homeless people as soon as possible, has won approval.

The plan also involves addressing homeless people’s other needs such as substance abuse counseling and job training. The Riverside City Council unanimously approved it Tuesday, March 13.

Details of the concept, which is considered a national best practice, were released in January.

The “housing first” strategy focuses on finding a stable place for people to live first, instead of requiring treatment for mental health or other issues first.

The City Council approved the plan, as well as agreements with nonprofit groups and government partners, 7-0.
