Champions of Flight, a fundraiser for the March Field Air Museum, will be held 6-8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at the museum, 22550 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside.
At the event, the museum’s first-ever Champions of Flight award will go to Bob Gilliland, the chief Lockheed “Skunk Works” test pilot who in 1964 piloted the first successful flight of the SR-71 Blackbird at Southern California’s Edwards Air Force Base. Gilliland went on to log more test flight hours at Mach 3 than any other pilot in the world, according to a press release from the March Field Air Museum.
Special guest will be aviator Dick Rutan, known for piloting the Voyager in 1986 in the first-ever non-stop, unrefueled flight around the world.
The event includes a no-host cocktail hour, sit-down dinner, awards gala and silent and live auctions. There will also be photo opportunities with the museum’s SR-71 Blackbird as a backdrop.
Tickets are $75, available at www.marchfield.org/home/upcoming-events/.
Proceeds will help the March Field Air Museum in its efforts to preserve the history of aviation through the restoration of vintage aircraft and the creation of educational programs ane exhibits.
