An annual tradition stretching more than 100 years, the NOS Citrus Fair needs no introduction.
But as this year’s fair, formerly known as the National Orange Show, expands to eight days – for the first time in 22 years – it’s easy to overlook something. Here are a few things you shouldn’t miss at this year’s fair:
1. ANIMALS
A few animals are mainstays of any fair, and organizers say they’ll have a petting zoo, pig races and pony rides. But don’t let that distract you from the monkeys or the stingrays (yes, you can pet them).
2. COSTUME CONTEST
If Super Movie Thursday – free admission and free viewing of Disney’s “The Incredibles” – whets your appetite for superheroes, dive in Sunday with the superhero costume contest. It starts at 1 p.m., and there’s no age limit. First place wins two free tickets to Comic Con Revolution on May 13 at the Ontario Convention Center and a $25 gift card to Four Color Fantasies in Rancho Cucamonga.
3. FOOD DRIVE
It’s not all fun and games. The fair will also host a canned food drive May 12. Bring five canned goods and get one free admission for that day. Once you’re in, enjoy the fun and games.
4. BAKED GOODS CONTEST
Speaking of food, why not mix up the fried fair food with some award-winning baked goods? The winners of the NOS Citrus Fair baking contest will be announced at 3 p.m. at the Citrus Building. It you didn’t already enter, you’re too late. The deadline for entries was April 27.
5. FIREWORKS
The fair is going out with a bang. The final day, May 14, will include a fireworks show at 8 p.m. It promises to “light up the night!”
