MURRIETA — A convicted felon who broke into a public works facility in Lake Elsinore and tried to flee with thousands of dollars worth of equipment pleaded guilty Wednesday to burglary.
Edvin Aroldo Alvarado, 36, admitted the felony charge as his case was set to go to trial. In exchange for his admission, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office dropped vandalism and grand theft allegations.
A Superior Court judge scheduled a sentencing hearing for Aug. 31 at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta.
Alvarado, of Los Angeles, is free on a $10,000 bond.
On the night of last July 25, 2017, Alvarado forced his way into a Lake Elsinore city yard at 521 Langstaff St., triggering an alarm that alerted law enforcement to the break-in, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Luke Torres.
Deputies reached the facility within a few minutes and encountered the ex-con “running away” after loading an estimated $12,000 worth of gear, including power tools, into his vehicle, the sergeant said.
“It was determined that the suspect had used a cutting instrument to gain access to the yard through a chain link fence, and subsequently broke into several storage containers,” Torres said.
Deputies quickly caught up to Alvarado and took him into custody without a struggle.
According to court records, the defendant has prior convictions for grand theft and resisting arrest.
He has served time in state prison within the last five years.
