Shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday, five helicopters landed on a grassy field near the hospital to the delight of hundreds, many of whom captured the moment on their smartphones.

Multiple law enforcement agencies from Rialto and Redlands police departments to San Bernardino and Riverside county sheriff’s took part in the fly-in, which included meet and greets between officers and patients, and tours of helicopters, squad cars and SWAT vehicles.

Fatima Moreno, 11, of Riverside headed outdoors with her family — parents, Claudia and Elias, and brother, Rich — to tour the helicopters and ask one very important question: How fast do the propellers turn per hour?

Chad Marlatt, a pilot for the Riverside County sheriff’s Aviation Unit, was happy to give the answer: 190 revolutions per minute.

The moment was “very emotional” for Fatima, Claudia Moreno said.

The family of former LLUCH patient Megan Colley started the Cops for Kids Fly-In 19 years ago. The event started small with cops stopping by the hospital to drop off toys, “but has evolved into what it is today,” said Briana Pastorino, a hospital senior media relations specialist.

Prior to the event’s conclusion, officers headed inside to deliver toys to patients. Toys varied from books to puzzles.
