An apparently suicidal man who held a knife against his throat and threatened to kill himself near the Galleria at Tyler in Riverside on Tuesday was detained, police said.

The incident happened about 5:20 a.m. at Tyler Street and Magnolia Avenue, according to a Riverside police news release.

Police say the man was walking aimlessly around the streets with a knife to his throat and was making threats to kill himself. Officers shut down traffic in the area.

The Department’s Emergency Negotiations Team arrived and was able to get the man to put down the knife after about 40 minutes, according to the release.

The man then tired to flee but was eventually detained and taken to a medical facility to be evaluated, police say.
