SAN BERNARDINO >> Taking college courses over the summer won’t just save students time; this summer, it can save them money.
A new $1 million grant will pay for up to 12 units during Cal State San Bernardino’s summer session for eligible seniors.
The CSUSB Graduation Initiative Grant was created at the direction of university President Tom#xe1;s D. Morales in response to the California State University’s Graduation Initiative 2025, according to a university spokesperson. The initiative seeks to raise graduation rates for all CSU students and eliminate gaps in opportunity and achievement between student groups. Only 21 percent of CSU students who enrolled in 2012 graduated in four years, according to information presented to a state Senate committee earlier this month.
“We are committed to working with our students, especially our seniors, to help them graduate sooner and in a timely basis,” Morales said in a news release. “This grant will ultimately save them thousands of dollars and reduce their student debt.”
The grant is being coordinated by the university’s College of Extended Learning and is in addition to any financial aid the students already receive.
“We don’t want to make summer just for those who can afford it,” said Tatiana Karmanova, dean of the College of Extended Learning.
About 70 percent of CSUSB students receive some financial assistance, she said.
Although the window for the Graduation Initiative Grant has closed, students can still apply for the university’s Summer Assistance Grant to assist with summer school fees, Karmanova said.
CSUSB’s regular summer session and first six-week summer session both begin today.
