Firefighters had the 1,044-acre Blaine fire between Riverside and Moreno Valley almost fully contained as of Tuesday, Aug. 15, fire officials said.

The blaze was 95 percent contained, according to an update put out by the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department.

The fire was reported about 4:10 p.m. Sunday at the east end of Blaine Street on the Riverside side of the hills. It quickly burned uphill into the Box Springs Mountain Preserve.

As the fire spread, an evacuation order was put in place for homes west of Hidden Springs Drive from Greenridge Drive to Country Gate Road. By Monday evening, the fire was about 30 percent contained. Evacuations were lifted by 9 p.m. Monday.

Fighting the fire was a somewhat messy ordeal; firefighters ended up dropping fire retardant directly on Moreno Valley homes. It’s a rare tactic — and it worked. Only one home sustained minor damage.

On Monday, firefighters went to the neighborhood to help clean up the mess. While a garden hose will cleanse your home, a high-pressure fire hose will get it off faster.

Residents who wish for firefighters’ help cleaning up the mess may call 951-436-4142.
